Make Money Online

The adventures of an online marketing wannabe

The Lazy Blogger

A few months ago I got the itch to start blogging, I thought that I could keep it up without a problem but I just noticed that this blog has not been updated for more than a month. Blogging is one of those things that seems to be fun for a short while and then gets old fast.

I have recently become motivated to add more content to my sites, it seems that it is starting to pay off. My ad revenue has been increasing slowly and steadily on the sites that I have been blogging on. I was starting to lose a little interest because I wasn’t seeing an increase in revenue, but here it is a month later and I am noticing some added income from a few of my sites that I would have never expected would take off. I want to point out that this is not the site that is making any money, it is some of my other sites. Strangely, this site is still not indexed by Google. I have owned this domain name for at least a couple of years now and have been trying to blog regularly for a few months now and still no Google love. I am convinced that the previous owner of the domain name jacked it up somehow and ruined any chances of ever getting indexed. It is hard to remain motivated when you are being snubbed by one of the giants. It has gotten to be kind of a challenge. I have been doing everythingthat I can think of to get indexed by Google but nothing is working. I have created a site map and backlinks to my site. I add regular fresh content to this site and I have submitted it to the search engines without any success.

  • Is Niche Socializer A Scam?

As an online marketer, I receive several emails a day promoting one product or another. I subscribe to most email marketing lists, mainly, to allow me to monitor what the other online marketing people are doing. I notice that there is a consistent trend as new products hit the market. There are a select number of individuals out there that do a very good job of introducing new products to the public and they do an exceptionally good job at finding other people to sell these products through affilliate marketing. Unfortunately, most of the people out there that were recruited to sell these new products have never tried them to begin with.

The product trends that I pay the most attention to are usually for informational products. These are products that tell me how I can become a better affiliate marketer and they also inform me about new ways to make money online. About once per quarter there will come a new product that just takes the affiliate marketing community by storm. This is usually generated by the uniqueness of the product and a well thought out marketing campaign.

The latest product that has hit the Internet is Niche Socializer. This is a product that boasts the ability to assist you to build your very own “Facebook” type of social networking site. With the current popularity of Facebook, the timing for introducing this product is right on and the current trend towards the popularity of Facebook should greatly assist in the sales of this product. However, as for the usefulness of the product, that still remains to be determined. My initial thoughts about a product like this instantly make me think “scam”. The only reason I say that is because of the way that these products are introduced. I have seen many products that have come about with a lot of hype through affiliate marketing that were a major waste of money. These usually fall into the new informational ebook or the digital “how-to” guide category. Most of these products are way overpriced and it would take a lot of time and effort to recoup your initial costs of buying the “how-to” ebook in the first place. This is also true for the new Niche Socializer software. While the product itself is a very good idea, the marketing campaign that they chose to implement this product raised the price of their product to an amount that very few people will be able to recoup anytime soon. True, there is money to be made by using this product, but the price threshold to purchase this product is just too great. Only a small percentage of the people that actually purchase this new software will see the profits advertised in it’s marketing deployment.

As I take a closer look at the marketing campaign for Niche Socializer I notice that the did not leave out any online marketing strategy and that there is good reason to take a closer look at how products like these are pushed out.

The guys behind Niche Socializer started by creating a new product for launch. They are not regurgitating old information or reselling someone elses product, they actually went out and created a new software product that ties right in with what is currently being used today. In this case, Facebook is the online entity that everyone is currently trying to figure out how to mimic and profit off.

They then solicited an affilliate sales program out to all of the top online marketers that would surely bring in a nice profit on each sale. By doing this properly (which they did), they create a “buzz” accross the Internet. You know that they have done a great job pre-marketing to affiliates when you can do a Google search days before the launch and can find that the top 50 pages of results contain URL’s to every kind of positive review that you could think of, and this being for a product that most have not tried and have no proof of what the product is, let alone if it actually works. These marketers are usually all sucked in ahead of time by the lure of 50% commissions off of a $1000 price tag, and all they have to do is promote and advertise the product the only way that they know how.

The marketing pitch does not stop there. Once the online marketers get a hold of the new affiliate program, they put together their own “bonus” packages to encourage you to buy this software through a link from their website. The competition then becomes, who can provide the biggest bonus?

Add to the above mentioned that these marketing tactics will many times come with some sort of time restraint. For instance, this new product will only be available to select few customers, after that the doors are closed and you won’t be able to purchase the product anymore.

While they might have created a fantastic software product it has gotten saturated by too many bogus reviews and too many affilliates. The consumer can never really get an honest review on the product because the waters are too muddied.

This is not to say that Niche Socializer is a bad product, because I have not tried the product yet. However, I have wasted too much time and money on products that have come to market like this that many times are not worth the while.

Should you purchase this product? Maybe, but no way at the current $1000 price tag.

  • My Portfolio of Sites

My goal of fifty blogs continues. I have been trying to diversify away from creating all real estate sites and have come up with a few alternatives so far. My main niche that I have stuck with for years is that of real estate. I picked real estate several years ago mostly because everyone in the world has a reason to be looking for information on real estate. I have noticed traffic from all over the world on many of my real estate related sites. Also, the topic of real estate is one that can cover a wide range subjects anywhere from real estate listings, to flipping properties, to home improvement you will find an interest in all somewhere in the world.

Knowing the successes that I have had within the real estate marketing niche, I have attempted to come up with other areas that I think could be just as popular and here are a few that I have come up with; college information sites, product review sites, and several career specific sites. While I have been working the real estate niche for around ten years now and have had some success at it, I have noticed that most of the other categories that I choose have not really compared to that of real estate. I attribute the success of the real estate niche to the fact that I have stayed focused on one specific area for a long period of time and that seems to have faired well with the search engines.

The only real problem with focusing on one specific niche is that most niches will follow a public trend. Lately, real estate has been a tough niche to tackle because of the major down turn in the real estate market. I have learned that you need to change your focus when this happens and try to accompdate for the trend. For example, the real estate industry is in a downward spiral but foreclosures are on the rise. This has prompted me to make some adjustments within my real estate sites to include more information on foreclosures and the site traffic seems to have stabilized.

If you are trying to come up with a new niche to profit off then you should always be trying to come up with something that is somewhat flexible, something that can grow with time, and something that has sustainability. I have learned through my own experience that this is not an easy task but I have learned that when you pick the right niche there is an opportunity to make a healthy profit.

  • Having your website indexed by Google means that your domain name will at least show up in the search results if you do a search query for yourname.com. As a present example, you can type in newventuresuccess.com in Google and you will find that there are no direct links from Google to this site. The results that come up all have newventuresuccess.com in the description somewhere, but there are currently not any link backs directly from Google. This can also be a good comparison for all the major search engines. The top three still remain as Google, Yahoo, and MSN so I just usually use those three for comparison. If I type in the domain name newventuresuccess.com into all three search engines I will get a different result. The biggest difference that I currently notice is that newventuresuccess.com shows up in the top results at Yahoo and MSN but the site does not show up at all on Google.

Once the site has been indexed by a specific search engine this will then open up the opportunity to receive traffic from other keywords than just using the actual domain name for the search. This page could eventually show up for the keyword “make money online” because this keyphrase is used throughout this blog. Depending on the competition for the keyphrase “make money online” the results would vary between all of the search engines. For example, MSN could have the site listed somewhere in the top 300 results and you would not find the site listed in the top 3000 at Yahoo. This all comes into play AFTER the site is indexed in the search engine. If newventuresuccess.com is not listed in the actual search engine results then there is no way that the keyphrase “make money online” would display any search results for the site at all. If done properly and with a lot of luck, you could conceivably get a top rating for your chosen keyword on the first day indexed. However, I usually just concentrate on getting my site listed first.

  • Three Weeks and No Google Love

I have been working on this site for three weeks now and have been making updates almost daily. I am posting regularly and have added some backlink opportunities. The domain name is one that I have had for more than a year and the site has always had the same theme: How to make money online. Even the previous owner of this domain name followed the same theme. It is with all this knowledge that surprises me that this site has not been indexed by Google yet. I have made several attempts at “doing it right” but seem to get zero search engine traffic to this site.

The fact that I can’t seem to get this site indexed in Google has got me thinking about all of the other sites that I have up. The reason that I always make such a big fuss about not being indexed in Google is because I have seen the results of sites not indexed and I have seen the results of those that have, and the ones that have been indexed always get more traffic. The only other way that you can get valuable visitors to your site is through backlinking, and this can be a very tedious task. I worry about the other sites that I have been putting up because I own quite a few of my own domain names, currently about 75 that I have for my own personal use and probably another 75 domains of previous web design customers. The reason that I have my own domains is bcause I am trying to make some money off of them and the reason I keep my customers domain names is because if I don’t, the previous customer will let them expire and then a year or two down the road they will want the name back but some domaineer would have purchased it and will sell it back for way too much money. These domain names only cost around $7 per year and without too much effort you can at least that much in a years time just from the previous traffic that was coming to the site.

I have mentioned my goal of creating 50 blogs in my previous posts. Given the fact that I have multiple domains and right now I only have about 10 operating blogs, I really want to concentrate putting up blogs for the domains that have been indexed by Google first.

  • The Search for the Missing Posts

I have written a couple of posts that have vanished somewhere between my iPhone and my server. I put in the effort to write the thing but when I hit “publish” it takes longer than usual to publish and then when I go to look at my site to see if it actually published, it is gone. On a positive note, they weren’t very good posts.

I think that I will end this one now to see if it works.

  • I am very excited to report that WordPress has just put out a new update for the iPhone. They now offer landscaped input! There are also other updates that were included but none better me than the landscape input.

I have already become a fan of using my iPhone to blog with; mostly for the convenience. My biggest and only complaint has been that you could not type in landscape mode, this really slowed down the whole process. Now, I am typing away almost as fast as I could on a normal size keyboard. The new update and the app itself are well worth the free price of admission.

If you have ever had any excuses not to blog, you should rethink your reasoning. The whole process has become quite simple. I am a firm believer that there is still a lot of money to be made off of Internet marketing and I think that I have stated it enough that WordPress makes the whole operation possible without having to have too much knowledge of web design. Basically, all you need is hosting and a WordPress blog and you are in business. Content truly is king and the convenience to add that content has arrived.

If you are looking to make money online then you need to start a blog and keep it up to date. The competition is fierce and you need to develop good habits if you plan on sticking with this for the long run. The only way that you can compete with the competition is that you need to be consistent in your habits. The people that don’t lose their focus are destined to be the clear winners in the online marketing race. Do yourself a favor and keep your site fresh with content, it will pay off in the long run.

  • Dilemma of the Misspelled Keywords

Lately, I have one site that is kicikn’ some but on traffic and revenue. It was the success of that one site that encouraged me to start this blog. It also motivated me to set my current goal of setting up and maintaining 50 blogs in 50 different niches. Currently, that one site is pulling in a little over $200 per month. I started calculating the math and figured I could eventually get to my six figure goal if I had 50 sites bringing in $200 per month.

When your doing this much writing (and you’re not really a writer) you start looking for constant reassurance that you are doing the right thing. I mean, I am investing a lot of time in this plan and there are no guarantees that it will ever payoff. Chances are, if this whole thing does pay off, it won’t pay off until years from now.

Yesterday, I decided to take a closer look at my $200 per month site and was little discouraged by my findings. As it turns out, it looks like the search engine traffic might be coming from misspelled keywords mixed with a broken link (or two) in the resulting page.

A few years ago I purchased a program called Directory Generator. This program takes a list of keywords that you have to create yourself ahead of time, and goes out and queries the search engines for the results of each keyword. The program then creates a web page for each one of those keywords and then displays a directory of the search engine results on each page. In my case, I created a list of around 2000 keywords. This resulted in the Directory Generator program to create 2000 pages on my website. I then had to upload all 2000 pages to my server. This whole process can be a little time consuming and requires a bit of quality control. After your done uploading all 2000 pages you’re not really in the mood to make any corrections. My ending result turned out to be 2000 web pages that basically pulled the meta description for all of these keywords, and then, when the program created a link back to the site with the description of the resulting site. The backlinks on my website all resulted in broken links. I think I am earning money because the only links that work are the ads.

This whole scheme is working fine for now but I am sure that the search engines will discover these bad pages and eventually lower my rankings.

Since I put up that site I have purchased a new Vista computer and for some reason can’t get the Directory Generator program working to correct my problem.

I think that the moral of this story is that there is money to be made on the Internet. However, I am starting to think that it might take some serious effort to get legitimate results that will hold the test of time.

Once again, I find myself typing away with no guarantees of future success. The only other thing that I can say about this is that if you plan to take on blogging 50 sites you had better plan on enjoying writing.

  • I noticed that I am spending a lot of time writing about how I am getting my site set up and most of that conversation is about all the great features in WordPress. I was thinking that maybe I should be spending more time writing about how to actually make money online, but then I figured that you need to get things set up first before you can even start to make money online. Therefore, I will continue discussing the set up proccess until there is sufficient traffic to make some money off. At that time I will discuss actual numbers.

I have several blogs that I am currently working and I have been fortunate enough to post to all of them on a regular basis so far.

Today, I was able to get a couple of clicks on the ads of one of the blogs that I have been working on. Previously, I had not received a click on that site for months. Hopefully, I am heading in the right direction.

  • Widgets Gone Wild

Being new to this whole WordPress thing I have been sifting through some of the stuff in the admin section and am truly amazed at the capabilities that are included in the WordPress program. I have spent years coming up with new ways to easily implement data throughout an entire website. I always wanted to code it myself because it would give me more control. I think one of my proudest moments was when I discovered PHP includes, this sped up my entire proccess exponentially and I was happy.

Move ahead a few years and I have discovered WordPress Widgets. These allow me to add just about anything to my website with one simple click. I can change my site often and have ultimate control.

Widgets also make it easy to change out affiliate programs and advertising. This is very convenient because you aren’t stuck with the same outdated information or sale item on your website for too long.

Widgets allow you the convenience of concentrating on the content of your site as opposed to wasting your efforts on the look, feel, and operation of your site.

Now that I have discovered one more tool to add to my arsenal, I should be more prepared for the onslaught of traffic that will be coming to my site very soon.
